Our Mortality

Our Mortality

We shall all die by the appointment of God (Hebrews 9 v 27). Everyone returns to the dust, "All go into one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again" (Ecclesiastes 3 v 20). We all shall experience death, "What man is he that liveth and shall not see death?" (Psalm 89 v 48).

However, when we die we don't pass away by chance as a result of disease, or accident or war but at the time of God's choosing, "Thou turnest man to destruction, Thou carriest them away as with a flood" (Psalm 90 v 3,5). The reality is that God has ultimate power over the length of our lives.

  1. What a reason then to make sure we are right with God, and at peace with God. The Lord is gracious and merciful so on faith in Christ Jesus we can be at peace with and know God.
  2. What a comfort when we are bereaved of those we love who are believers in Christ. They haven't died by chance, their death is ordered by God in His infinite wisdom. They have died at a time chosen by God who does all things well.
  3. What a help when we come to die. On faith in Christ we are reconciled to God, at death our bodies perish but our souls pass into the immediate presence of Christ. The death of a Christian is our heavenly Father bringing us home. So be thankful your death is in God's hands. Live your life as a believer knowing you are safe in the hands of the eternal God.

"Plagues and deaths around me fly;
Till He bids, I cannot die."
