“How hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of god!”

“How hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of god!”

Mark 10 v 24

Jesus is not here speaking against wealth, but trusting in it, an altogether different thing. There is a very real danger of people putting money, and what you can have and do with it in God's place and trusting in it.  Wealth can be a great hindrance to someone coming to faith in Christ and entering the kingdom of God.

The salvation of someone who is financially well off is not impossible, many wealthy people have in the grace of God come to faith in Christ. However sadly many seek their peace, joy and happiness in money and what they can have and do with it. They don't see that those things are only truly found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Anyone who has ever gone door to door to tell people about Christ would tell you that you usually get a very cold response in wealthy neighbourhoods. People who are quite comfortable in life rely on that, forgetting all their money and things bought with it are taken from them when they die.

Everyone needs to guard against the love of money, and all you can get and do with it. It's not so much having it but living for it and trusting in it that ruins people's souls. You can't buy forgiveness of sins, or peace with God, or a place in God's heaven with all the money in the world. They can only be had by God's grace through faith in Christ alone. To be rich in God's grace on faith in Christ is far better than to be financially well off.

There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin;
He only could unlock the gate
Of heaven, and let us in.
