“Call upon me in the day of trouble”

"Call upon me in the day of trouble"

Psalm 50 v 15

The psalmist speaks of a particular situation in life, a day of trouble. We're told what we need to do at such a time, call upon God. The promise is given that God will deliver us with the purpose that we shall glorify Him.

We can have a day of trouble as a result of the opposition of the ungodly world (2 Timothy 3 v 2), or family troubles (Proverbs 17 v 1). A day of trouble can be a result of sickness (Isaiah 38 v 14), being let down by friends (2 Timothy 4 v 10, 16), slander by enemies (Psalm 41 v 5-8) or bereavement (Psalm 88 v 18). Whatever the cause of our trouble is, it is clear we should take it to the Lord in prayer, "Call upon me". Just as a good father would want their children to go to them in a time of trouble, how much more God our heavenly Father.

God promises when we do, He will deliver us. Sometimes it's by directly removing the trouble or it's cause. On other occasions it's by God giving strength, help and comfort needed to deal with it. Ultimately, it's by God taking the believer to be with Christ where there is nothing to trouble them.

The ultimate purpose in this is that God will be glorified. God is glorified by us taking the trouble prayerfully to Him and confiding in Him. God is also glorified by delivering us in the way that is best in His infinite wisdom. We also glorify God when we trust in Him to help us and praise Him for the help, He gave us.

The old song says, "Nobody knows the troubles I'm in", but in fact God does and we need to prayerfully call upon Him no matter what our troubles might be.
